1-A strong increase in order book
NEL is a Norwegian company providing solutions for the production, storage and distribution of hydrogen from renewable sources of energy.
NEL released its quarterly results on 20 October with an order book up 54% on Q2 2022. The big contracts are coming through and management during the conference call was very optimistic that further large contracts will be announced.
2-A new wave of hydrogen policy support
In the US the Bi-partisan Infrastructure Act of 2021 already provided for the construction of hydrogen networks and was reinforced in August 2022 by government funding (Loan guarantee for large hydrogen storage projects). In June, the Netherlands announced the construction of a 1400 km hydrogen network by 2026. And in July 2022, the European Commission approved 4.5 billion in funding for a hydrogen project.
3-There are still many question marks.
The first question is on NEL ability to connect clean electricity production zones and geographical areas where electrolysis will manufacture truly green hydrogen for consumption. The second question mark is related to challenging profitability of certain sub segments due to the lack of economies of scale: For example, NEL remains structurally loss-making in the manufacturing of hydrogen filling stations.
As it is often the case with the stock market, investors were over enthusiastic about NEL's first orders in 2021 when NEL share price reached 2.8 Euros. 18 months later, NEL published a strong order book (2.5 times higher than in Q3 2021), its shares were trading around 1.2 euros. Between too much optimism and too much skepticism, the stock market often struggles to find the right balance, especially for emerging industries like hydrogen.
